Linux auf einer WatchGuard Firebox X500

Im RaumZeitLabor tauchte letztens eine WatchGuard Firebox X500 (Modellnummer R6264S) auf, die von ihrem Besitzer auf den Müll geworfen wurde. Für uns ist die Kiste allerdings durchaus noch zu gebrauchen: In ihr steckt ein größtenteils aus Standard-x86-Hardware bestehendes System mit Serieller Konsole, 6 Ethernet-Ports, 256 MB SDRAM und einem Celeron 1,2 GHz.

Standardmäßig wird die Firebox von einer 64 MB-CF-Card betrieben, auf der ein Linux 2.0 (!) läuft. Allerdings läuft die Hardware auch unter Linux 2.6.33.3 ohne Probleme :-).

VGA und PS/2

Um ins BIOS zu gelangen sind zwei Sachen nötig: ein VGA-Ausgang (nachdem man einmalig die Console Redirection aktiviert hat ist VGA nicht mehr nötig) und ein PS/2-Ausgang. Den VGA-Ausgang erlangt man, indem man eine PCI-Grafikkarte in den freien PCI-Slot einbaut (aufgrund des Gehäuses muss man dazu das Mainboard ausbauen). Der PS/2-Ausgang ist schon interessanter: Der Port ist zwar auf dem Mainboard vorhanden, wurde allerdings nur in Form einer Stiftleiste herausgeführt. Er ist mit PKMB1 beschriftet und befindet sich auf dem Mainboard direkt beim LCD-Panel.

Die Belegung habe ich in folgendem Bild festgehalten:

Ich habe mir einen Adapter gelötet, indem ich den PS/2-Port eines sehr alten Mainboards entlötet habe und an ein Flachbandkabel passend angelötet habe. Da ich nicht vorhabe, die Firebox häufig via PS/2 zu nutzen (schließlich hat man nach der Installation die Serielle Konsole zur Verfügung), habe ich mir nicht die Mühe gemacht, die Buchse im Gehäuse unterzubringen.

Installation via PXE-Boot und debootstrap

Am einfachsten ist es wohl (sofern man bereits eine PXE-Umgebung eingerichtet hat, ansonsten gibt es hier eine Anleitung), die Firebox via PXE ein Live-System (wie z.B. grml) zu starten. Von dort aus kann man dann debootstrap nutzen, um die CF-Card (oder eine IDE-Festplatte zu befüllen). Zunächst installieren wir also das Minimalsystem und wechseln dann via chroot in die neue Installation:

Nun setzen wir ein Passwort, konfigurieren die Mountpoints sowie apt und installieren ssh (damit wir uns später übers Netz einloggen können) und grub:

Wenn grub installiert wird, fragt debconf nach der linux command line, woraufhin wir mit libata.force=pio4 console=ttyS0,115200 antworten. Die Einstellung von PIO4 ist nötig, damit die Erkennung des CF-Card-Reader beim Boot nicht hängt (er probiert sonst schnellere Modi, die aber nicht vom Reader unterstützt werden), die console-Einstellung sorgt dafür, dass die Ausgabe des Kernels beim Starten auf der seriellen Schnittstelle landet.

Da der Debian-Kernel derzeit (linux-image 2.6.32-3-686) auch das alte IDE-Subsystem enthält und die gerade erwähnte libata-Option natürlich nur funktioniert, wenn man auch libata nutzt, habe ich mich dazu entschlossen, einen eigenen Kernel zu bauen (zusätzlich braucht man für diesen keine initrd und er kommt mit einer schlanken Konfiguration). Du kannst dir entweder die Konfiguration herunterladen und den Kernel selbst bauen oder gleich das Debian-Paket installieren (passendes Header-Paket). Ich gehe davon aus, dass du ab jetzt einen Kernel auf dem System installiert hast.

Als nächstes konfigurieren wir grub (er soll ebenfalls die serielle Schnittstelle nutzen) und installieren ihn in den MBR:

Damit wir uns nun auch über die serielle Schnittstelle einloggen können, muss in der /etc/inittab eine Zeile auskommentiert werden, welche folgendermaßen aussieht:

Jetzt können wir das System neu starten und werden auf der seriellen Schnittstelle (z.B. mit screen /dev/ttyUSB0 115200 nutzbar) vom frisch installierten Debian begrüßt.
